BayCon 2022 Welcomes Featured Guest Tananarive Due

BayCon 2022: The Sun Rises is happy to share our latest Featured Guest: Tananarive Due!

TANANARIVE DUE (tah-nah-nah-REEVE doo) is an award-winning author who teaches Black Horror and Afrofuturism at UCLA. She is an executive producer on Shudder’s groundbreaking documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. She and her husband/collaborator Steven Barnes wrote “A Small Town” for Season 2 of “The Twilight Zone” on CBS All Access/Paramount+. A leading voice in black speculative fiction for more than 20 years, Due has won an American Book Award, an NAACP Image Award, and a British Fantasy Award, and her writing has been included in best-of-the-year anthologies. Her books include Ghost Summer: Stories, My Soul to Keep, and The Good House. She and her late mother, civil rights activist Patricia Stephens Due, co-authored Freedom in the Family: a Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights. She is married to author Steven Barnes, with whom she collaborates on screenplays. They live with their son, Jason, and two cats.

The Sun Rises with Writer Guest of Honor Steven Barnes

We are excited to present BayCon 2022: The Sun Rises!  

BayCon 2022’s theme will explore both what we did in the time we were apart and what we’re looking forward to now that we are back together. Some of us had great bursts of creation during lockdown. Others — equally important — spent their energy on simply returning to us as whole as possible. Over the weekend we’ll examine how these paths have served us, and look forward to what is to come. The last two years have shaped a more dystopian media, but simultaneously created a desire for something more hopeful and positive.

The question of the weekend is perhaps, “what did our paths look like apart and what will they look like as they join together again?”

Writer Guest of Honor Steven Barnes

We are pleased to announce our Writer Guest of Honor Steven Barnes! Steven is the NY Times bestselling author of over thirty novels of science fiction, horror, and suspense.  The Image, Endeavor and Cable-Ace Award winning author also writes for television, including The Twilight Zone, Stargate SG-1, Andromeda, and an Emmy Award winning episode of The Outer Limits.

He also has taught at UCLA, Seattle University, and lectured at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.  With his wife, British Fantasy Award winning author Tananarive Due, he has created online courses in Afrofuturism, Black Horror, and Screenwriting. Steven was born in Los Angeles, California, and except for a decade in the Northwest, and three years in Atlanta Georgia, has lived in that area all his life.  Steve and Tananarive live with their son Jason.  www.afrofuturismwebinar.com, www.sunkenplaceclass.com

Arley Sorg is co-Editor-in-Chief at Fantasy Magazine, senior editor at Locus Magazine, associate editor at both Lightspeed & Nightmare Magazines, and a columnist for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. He takes on multiple roles, including slush reader, movie and book reviewer, and interviewer at multiple venues, including Clarkesworld Magazine and his own site: arleysorg.com. Arley grew up in England, Hawaii, and Colorado, and studied Asian Religions at Pitzer College. He lives in Oakland, and, in non-pandemic times, usually writes in local coffee shops. He is a 2014 Odyssey Writing Workshop graduate.
