BayCon 2022 Welcomes Featured Guest Tananarive Due

BayCon 2022: The Sun Rises is happy to share our latest Featured Guest: Tananarive Due!

TANANARIVE DUE (tah-nah-nah-REEVE doo) is an award-winning author who teaches Black Horror and Afrofuturism at UCLA. She is an executive producer on Shudder’s groundbreaking documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. She and her husband/collaborator Steven Barnes wrote “A Small Town” for Season 2 of “The Twilight Zone” on CBS All Access/Paramount+. A leading voice in black speculative fiction for more than 20 years, Due has won an American Book Award, an NAACP Image Award, and a British Fantasy Award, and her writing has been included in best-of-the-year anthologies. Her books include Ghost Summer: Stories, My Soul to Keep, and The Good House. She and her late mother, civil rights activist Patricia Stephens Due, co-authored Freedom in the Family: a Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights. She is married to author Steven Barnes, with whom she collaborates on screenplays. They live with their son, Jason, and two cats.

Join us on Saturday for a virtual mini-con!

What are YOU doing with your Saturday?

You didn’t think we’d forget Memorial Day Weekend, did you? Although our convention is still postponed, our programming ninjas have nevertheless managed to pull off a most stunning event. BayCon is hosting a half-day virtual mini-con this Saturday with confirmed Guests of Honor, panelists, and performers.

11AM Saturday, May 23rd, we will be hosting a live ZOOM conference.

Meet Toastmaster Dan Toole

BayCon 2020: The Future is Now has a TOASTMASTER!

Dan has been in science fiction fandom for over a decade, the last two as President of the world’s oldest Star Trek Fan Club, STARFLEET. He is excited to join us in hosting our other Guests of Honor next year. Fun fact: Dan looks almost exactly like the president of The Royal Manticoran Navy.

Artist Guest of Honor Gary Villarreal

Our interview with artist guest of honor Gary Villarreal was delayed by a series of missed connections, and then lost when a MacBook didn’t survive a six-foot drop. He remained patient through it all, and the takeaway is that the BayCon programming staff made an amazing choice in inviting the guy.

Maybe Villarreal’s small-town (Bryan, TX [pop. 85000] is 150 miles from San Antonio) upbringing had something to do with it. His job at a supermarket meat counter ("it was actually a lot of fun", he said) led to a design gig with the market.

Three years after graduating from Texas A&M, he ventured to southern California to pursue his art career. "After growing up in the country, it was definitely a culture shock, but I treat people the way I want to be treated", Villarreal said. "Humility and an ability to get along with people helped get me here".

Villarreal’s day job is concept art for Super Bit Machine, which develops real-time multiplayer games. Otherwise, he cultivates his freelance experience, "always creating characters".

Villarreal’s BayCon schedule taps into his creativity, while involving him with attendees. "I look forward to meeting new people, and the live drawing will be fun", he said.
