BayCon 2020: Coronavirus Update

It has come to BayCon’s attention that today the San Mateo County Health office issued a press release that now bans public and private gatherings of 50 persons or more.

The restriction is effective until April 6, which is nearly 2 months before our event date. As of today we are still planning to hold BayCon 2020 over Memorial Day Weekend and will continue to monitor the situation as it develops.

A Health Bulletin from BayCon 2020

Dear Members:

With the growing public health concern about Novel Coronavius (COVID-19), we want to assure you that our main concern is for the health and safety of our members, guests, staff, and their families. We are committed to staying on top of the the latest developments, and are closely monitoring CDC guidelines to ensure that BayCon remains a safe space for the duration of the convention in May.

As things continue to develop we will update you. If you have any concerns regarding attending the convention, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, we recommend the following:

BayCon 2020 is taking a proactive approach to make sure everyone at the convention is informed and involved. Thank you for partnering with us to help keep our convention healthy.

Con Suite: Let BayCon Host Your Room Party

Traveling from out of town and don’t want the logistical hassle of planning a party? BayCon’s Con Suite is offering a new service called Party In A Box! Book a 3-4 hour sponsorship slot in our Con Suite (other time blocks will be considered on a case-by-case basis). Send or bring us your materials and we will put out flyers and swag, hang posters, and put up decorations. Prominent signs will be displayed to indicate your sponsorship and we will happily host your representative so they can spend the time chatting with our attendees about your event or group while our staff handles the rest. Several pre-planned themes are available or we will work with you on a custom event of your design.

Hot & Cold food options are available. Reserve early for prime time slots. The last day to reserve is April 1st, 2020.

Applications for the BayCon Art Show are now open

BayCon 2020 Art Show applications are now open. BayCon is now accepting applications for our traditional Art Show. Amateurs and professionals can apply to be in the Art Show–submit your artwork with a science fiction or fantasy theme. We accept all kinds of artwork, including paintings, sketches, drawings, sculpture, jewelry, and so on. This year we continue our new artist categories, including Youth and Student artists!

Announcing Gallowclass Writers Workshop

Want to take your writing to the next level? The Bay Area’s longest running science fiction fan convention is hosting a writing workshop with writer, storyteller, and educator M. Todd Gallowglas. In this workshop, students will go through an immersive, four-day writing experience that will will begin on Friday with what the old chestnut, “Write what you know,” really means. On Saturday, students will learn about various types of story structure. Sunday will explore which perspective is the best for a story or or scene. Finally, Monday will take writers twisting the emotional knife… again and again and again…

BayCon Hotel Update

We have an important announcement regarding making reservations at the Marriott.

We are aware that some of you may have trouble booking a room when the reservation includes shoulder nights (specifically Thursday May 21 and Monday May 25). Please go ahead and make your room reservation at the convention rate for whichever nights you can get. After you receive a confirmation from the hotel, please send an email to hotel@baycon.org with your name, confirmation #, and desired check-in/check-out dates.

We will work with the hotel to fix this for you, and once your reservation is fixed you will receive an email from us regarding the correction. Thank you for your patience. We want to sell the hotel room reservation just as much as you want to make it!
