Utopia, n. any visionary system of political or social perfection.
Dystopia, n. an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.
Heroes and villains. Empire and Rebellion. The corruption of power and the benevolence of compassion. Utopian and dystopian representations of social and political structures are often the backbone of narratives in science fiction and fantasy literature, comics books and other media. They pose big questions about the grand social experiment that is human society, how our world or other worlds may look in the future, or ways in which writers’ imaginations transport us to Utopias, better worlds where society lives in harmony, or Dystopias, tortured worlds often in disguise as better worlds, and all the interpretations in between.
As humans we often think of the choices we make and the sort of world we’re creating for ourselves. The rise of Dystopian fiction in the modern era has a lot to do with the cynical worldview of the present day. At BayCon 2017, we’ll explore the fascination with Utopian and Dystopian themes across the Science Fiction & Fantasy genre, comic books and media. We’ll discuss how golden and silver age visions of utopia have transformed into more gritty, realistic expectations of dystopian outcomes. At the convention itself, you’ll get to choose a side, to fightfor the ideals of every person’s dream, or to help control the fate of humanity through order anda stark, but realistic vision of the future.
Come join us at BayCon 2017: Dystopia/Utopia. Whichever side you choose, we guarantee you’ll have an awesome time.
