Anastasia Hunter had the the very good fortune to have a mother who loves reading books, especially Anne McCaffrey, and was the librarian at her elementary school (equaling unlimited book borrowing), along with a father who loved learning about the special effects magic behind movies with subscriptions to American Cinematography and Cinefex magazines. In high school, a friend’s mother introduced Anastasia to science fiction with Larry Niven’s Integral Trees, and the rest, as they say quickly slid downhill into reading everything she could lay her hands on, along with a high school library filled with an odd collection of 1970’s Best of Science Fiction and various other SF books, plus a librarian who would let her order whatever she liked as he knew she would definitely read it.
Anastasia attended her first convention, San Diego Comic Con in 1991 and knew she was hooked when she found a place that included so many wonderful aspects of fandom all under one roof, including the highlight of early SDCC’s – the Masquerade! In 1993, Anastasia started playing Magic: the Gathering, along with networked PC video games Red Planet and Battletech, while learning to sew her own costumes for Renaissance Fairs and SCA events, and yet still somehow managed to graduate from SDSU with a BA in Economics and minor in Russian before the millennia.
By the time 1998 rolled around, Anastasia was asked to volunteer for the San Diego WesterCon in the Programming Department, which resulted in translating hundreds of 3×5 cards into an Excel spreadsheet and printing the grid on large poster sized paper. Hooray for technology! It was at this event where this young fan girl had her ultimate fan girl revelation by discovering the many amazing individuals who give hundreds to thousands of hours of their time and vast amounts of energy to host events of epic proportion for the science fiction and fantasy communities and which inspired her to actively volunteer and costume at all manner of events and cons everywhere.
Anastasia is currently the Chair and Director of Programming for Gaslight Gathering, a San Diego Steampunk convention that will be held in October 2016, President of SansFis, Inc., the organization who recently hosted this past San Diego WesterCon, and a part-time Tusken Raider for the 501st Imperial Sands San Diego Garrison, and a 15 year practitioner of the arcane art of eminent domain for the State of California – Department of Transportation. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, costuming, and local craft beer shenanigans with friends and family.
