Get Involved

It takes a lot of work to put on a convention like BayCon. Many people contribute to our success with their work both during the convention and throughout the year. Although BayCon is located in Santa Clara, our volunteers come from all over the west coast. There are two ways that you can volunteer to get involved in BayCon.

Gophers

Gophers help keep the convention going by helping with a myriad of tasks, from checking badges on the party floor, to helping set-up rooms. Gophers who work a minimum of 18 hours during the convention may receive a refund of their membership or a membership for the following year. Gophers also have access to a crash room and can spend time in the Gopher Hole, when not on duty. Gophers must be at least 13 years of age by the beginning of BayCon.

Most gophers put in their hours around the weekend of BayCon itself. If you don't want to miss any of the convention events, never fear, we can still use your help during set up and tear down on the days immediately before or after BayCon proper. Don't be worried if you have physical limitations, we will find a way to put you to work. Also, some gophers are needed throughout the year to help distribute flyers and for other publicity events.

Staff

BayCon staff members have assigned jobs in their department. Most staff positions include working during the convention, although there are a few positions that require only pre-convention work. Staff members are required to work 30 hours over the course of the convention weekend and in exchange receive a membership badge and partial room credit.

If you are interested in volunteering for a staff position e-mail the department that interests you or info10@baycon.org to inquire about getting involved. Or come to a staff meeting, which are all open to the public, and talk to your prospective department head.

Staff Meeting Dates

Staff meetings begin at 1:00 PM and are held at the Hyatt in Santa Clara unless otherwise noted. The hotel is located at 5101 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara, California, 95054.

Open Staff Positions

We are looking for a number of qualified staff people. Keep checking back here to see what staff positions are available.

Newsletter Staff: If you enjoy writing, have a sense of humor, and can form complete sentences using at least one word of three or more syllables, you've got what it takes to join the newsletter staff. Experience with photo-processing/retouching and page layout software and a devotion to Jackals is desired but not required. You must attend one weekend meeting in May in the Sacramento area. Professional writing experience is NOT required. Contact newsletter10@baycon.org for more information.

Registration: Join the weasel army and help welcome attendees to BayCon as part of the registration department. Potential weasels must be able to do simple data entry, cashiering duties and most importantly, must play well with others! People persons only need apply!
