Gaming
BayCon's wonderful gaming staff will keep the room open 24 hours a day for the entire 4 days of the convention. All ages and convention members are welcome. Board games, card games, RPGs, miniatures and other tabletop games are some of the various types that will be available for your enjoyment.
The gaming room is located in the North Beach / Collaborate 3 room.
The gaming room has two sections:
Open Gaming: For pickup games between friends and for use with "loaner games." Stop by, sit down, and start playing.
The "loaner games" are various board games and card games available in the gaming room for convention members to borrow. The gaming staff ask that you play with the loaner games in the gaming room.
Scheduled Events: Our scheduled gaming events will include various card and miniatures tournaments, demos by game companies, and organized RPGs.
Here is a list of tournaments and other organized activities that will be going on in the gaming room. Please check the newsletter or our whiteboard for additional events, and come and join us in the fun.
- Friday 6:00pm — Cribbage Tournament
- Cribbage is a game whose origins stretch back to Charles the First's England, and to this day is the only card game that is legal to play for money in English pubs. Simple math, cunning strategy, and a measure of luck will be needed if you want to come out on top in this traditional card game.
- Friday 6:00pm — Carabande Grand Prix
- Gentlemen, start your engines! Warm up your carrom-flicking
fingers and join us as the race is about to begin! Carabande is a
fast paced game of hand-eye coodination that pits your puck
scooting skills against up to 7 other players in a road race that
would make the boys at Lemans or Daytona stand up and take
notice.
We will be running 2 rounds: A qualifying round in which I will be setting up both of my sets and accomodating up to 16 players, followed by "The Big Race" in which the top 4 from each qualifier will square off in one massive race! - Friday 9:00pm — Teenagers from Outer Space
- Title: Who's got spirit?
Welcome to your first day of Galaxy High! If you thought that life at the edge of the galaxy is hard now, add the fact that you are a freshman in high school (The proms, gym class, homeroom and all). Add the fact that your school spirit is missing... Literally (The school spirit is what keeps you school afloat in space)! How will the new kids save the school? How will they survive their first encounter with the sports teams? How will they handle their first unsupervised encounter with a member of the opposite sex? Will they find the lost spark that made their school the best in the galaxy, or will the school plummet into a star just to spite them? In the mad world of GALAXY HIGH, anything can happen!
- Saturday 1:30am — Late Night Talisman game
- Old school gamers will remember this one: Back in the day, a little company from England called "Games Workshop" actually produced games that didn't involve hundreds of dollars of miniatures per player to play. Games like Chaos Marauders, Space Crusade, and the crown jewel of their line—Talisman! Come and take a trip down memory lane and play a little Talisman, The Magical Quest Game, with us. All of the expansions (except Talisman Dragons) will be in play.
- Saturday 11:00am — Heroscape
- Imagine the Greatest Battle of All Time, when all the heroes and warriors of history and fantasy converge on a battlefield you design. Intense, but easy-to-learn game play: heroes' actions are governed by stats on army cards indicating movement, range, armor, attack powers, and more.
- Saturday 2:00pm — Loony Labs Zendo Tournament
- From the Mystic East come the Zen Masters of Loony Labs (would you believe Eastern Seaboard?). They have sent to us a man of great wisdom (o.k. he's the only one of them with a Kimono). He has traveled far from his homeland (in the East Bay... I told you they were from the east), to bring us a challenge! Find your way to true enlightenment through the arrangement of little plastic pyramids! So bring your Buddha Nature down to Gaming and see if you have what it takes to find Nirvana.
- Saturday 5:00pm — Munchkin Tournament
- Strap on your Boots of Butt-Kicking, grab your Hammer of Kneecapping and come join our Munchkin Tournament. It's a card game which is a lot like role-playing games, but without all those unimportant bits like character development and plot. The goal is simple: kill monsters and take their stuff. Beginners encouraged, being a Munchkin isn't a skill, it's a state of mind. And remember: in the end, there can be only one (and they get all the loot)!
- Sunday 11:00 am — Warhammer 40,000 Combat Patrol Tournament
- "In the grim future, there is only war"... but what's the good of a grim future if you can't have a little fun with it? We will be hosting a 400pt modified RTT using the "Combat Patrol" rules and scenario. A number of armies will be available for loan if you can't bring your own.
- Sunday 2:00 pm: Loony Labs Fluxx Tournament
- At the beginning of it, Fluxx appears to be a simple card game. You draw a card from the deck, and play a card from your hand. Simple enough, right? Well, that was the first player's turn, by the time it gets back around to them again the rules are almost guaranteed to have changed at least twice, if not more. Come and see if your goals can be achieved! Will the winner fly a rocket to the moon? Will they achieve Death by Chocolate? These questions and more will be answered, so be there!
- Sunday 5pm — Blood Bowl
- Blood Bowl is the game in which Orcs, Elves, Trolls, Humans and many other fantastical creatures participate in the sport of football. Take the role of a Blood Bowl coach looking to work his team of armoured and psychotic players up through the leagues, and then on to win the fabled Blood Bowl Championship itself!
- Time TBA — Gloom
- "Terrified by topiary? Menaced by mice? Perturbed by pudding? Put on your Victorian hats for a game of family disaster and death. Make your family as miserable as possible, while trying to cheer up your opponents' families, before offing characters in the most creative ways possible. Alliteration and a good sense of the grim absurd reccomended in this game for players 10 and up."
- Time TBA — Robo Rally
- Amaze your friends! Astound complete strangers! Try desperately to keep the conveyor belt that you're standing on from dumping you into a bottomless pit! Join us in this madcap romp through a factory where the map is easily as likely to kill you as your opponents.
