Friday2:30 PMCedarFlash Crowd / Flash Mob

In "Flash Crowd," Larry Niven postulated an instantaneous, practically free, transfer booths that could take one anywhere on Earth in milliseconds. One consequence not predicted by the builders of the system, was that with the almost instantaneous reporting of newsworthy events, tens of thousands of people worldwide would flock to the scene of anything interesting - along with criminals, hoping to experience or exploit the instant disorder and confusion so created. A similar phenomenon can occur when a web site catches the attention of a large number of people, and gets an unexpected and overloading surge of traffic. A notorious example is the Slashdot effect. And flash mobs have been seen all over the world, utilizing the web and cell phones to attract participants. Listen to our panelists discuss the phenomenon and the social implications.

Friday4:00 PMFir/OakThose Terrible Middle Ages!

Everyone knows about the Middle Ages. They were a dark period of superstition and savagery, when art was awkward and clumsy, science and reason were unknown, and religious fanatics attacked foreign lands. And what about that droit de seigneur? Only in the Renaissance did humanity awaken, take a bath, and begin thinking again. But as Mark Twain remarked, it ain't what people know that's the problem. It's what they know that ain't so.

Friday4:00 PMSan CarlosPrint, Film, & Software: the Triumvirate of Evil?

In the United States, there are books, comics, and films. In Japan, there are manga and anime. In both places, there are computer and console games. Many times, the expression of an entertaining idea in one form is not far behind another. Often, when all three forms are used, one of the forms is clearly superior and another just as clearly inferior. What makes each form successful (or not)? How does one ensure that each successive form is better than the previous ones? And how can we prevent media machines from forcing successively inferior products onto the market?
